An app that will help you discover the hidden history of lead mining in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Lead mining was once big business in the Yorkshire Dales and everywhere you go you will eventually spot a ruined smelt mill, spoil heaps or mine entrances. This free app is designed to help you safely explore some of these fascinating sites and find out more about the industry and the people who worked in it. You will find short descriptions, location information and photos for 18 key lead mining sites, plus seven walking routes all plotted onto Ordnance Survey mapping. There are also two audio trails; links to a video tour; panoramas; accessibility tips and lots of useful visitor information such as places to eat; accommodation links; public toilets and car parks. A separate section contains some fun stuff for kids to do while you are out and about exploring. Finally we have included a lead mine ghost story and information on a recent art and poetry project based on Grassington Moor.
Produced by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and funded by Historic England.
The app uses GPS to provide location alerts and directions. Please note that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
